How many customers does a business lose to unanswered calls?
You're with a client, the phone rings and you can't pick up. It feels small, but over a month it can add up to real money.
What the research says
There's no single number for every business, but the studies that exist point the same way:
A 411 Locals study tracked calls to 85 small businesses across 58 industries for 30 days: 6 out of 10 calls weren't answered by a person (about half went to voicemail, the rest got no response). It's a small study from 2016, but it shows the problem.
CallRail, a call-tracking company, reported in 2026 that across 225,000+ businesses about 1 in 4 calls goes unanswered.
Invoca, another call-tracking company, says fewer than 3% of callers who reach voicemail leave a message.
The last two sell solutions for this, so treat their numbers as a reference, not an exact truth. Still, the message is clear: many people who call and don't get an answer don't call back. They call the next business on the list.
Run your own numbers
The math is simple and you can do it with your own numbers: missed calls per week × % that would become a customer × value of a customer × 4 weeks.
An example: a salon missing 10 calls a week. If 3 in 10 would have booked and each appointment is worth $60, that's 10 × 30% × 60 × 4 = $720 a month. And that doesn't count the people who would have become regulars.

5 things you can do this week
Count your missed calls. Your phone or carrier shows them. Write them down for a week: it's almost always more than you think.
Text the people you missed, automatically. A message like "Sorry we missed you! Can I help you book here?" wins back many people who weren't going to call again.
Call back fast. The sooner the better: within 5 minutes they still remember you; the next day they've booked somewhere else.
Update your voicemail. Tell people how to book without waiting for you (a link, or "text us on WhatsApp").
Check when people call. If many calls come after hours or during your busiest time, that's where most of the loss is.
If you'd rather not watch the phone
That's what Skye does: an AI receptionist that answers calls, texts, WhatsApp and Instagram 24/7, in English and Spanish, and books the appointment in your calendar. Want to hear it? There's a sample call on our site.
